The Give a Hoot Program was launched in November of 2012.
For every Owl Pillow we sell, we will donate one to a child in need. We at Willow Creek Studio want these children to know the Someone Gives a Hoot!
The inspiration behind the Give a Hoot Owl Pillow is my nephew, Jack. He is a tough little 5 year old who had a very rough beginning. At the young age of 2 months, he was hospitalized with a rare disease called Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis (LCH). He spent 19 months in the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) while he battled this disease. Throughout his treatment Jack had multiple rounds of chemo, received over 600 blood and platelet transfusions, experienced respiratory failure on three occasions, requiring ventilation and a tracheotomy, received two bone marrow transplants from an unrelated donor, and had countless bacterial and viral infections. He evaded death many times. The doctors at one point broaded the subject of "how much is too much" regarding continued treatment. However, after a second bone marrow transplant, Jack slowly started to improve. His parents and doctors were amazed by his progress. They refer to his ongoing recovery as "miraculous". Jack received the nick-name "The Rock" due to his resilience and strength. He is an inspiration to all who are touched by his journey. Finally after 19 months in the hospital, Jack, The Rock, was released just before his 2nd birthday. He was even healthy enough to walk out under his own power (having learned to walk in the hospital). While at CHOP, his days were filled with yucky medicines, annoying tests and painful treatments, but the one thing that brightened his day was the special toy or gift that was donated by an anonymous, caring individual. Now that Jack is home and healthy, enjoying every moment of his life, I want to give a bit of joy to the children that still need it. So, for every Owl Pillow that is purchased, we donate one to a child in need. We want the children to know that "Someone Gives a Hoot".
